On the 11th, the 13th and the 14th of October, on the stage of the National Theater “Ivan Vazov, were the premiere shows of “The Goat Or Who is Sylvia”, written by the legendary American playwright Edward Albee and directed by Yavor Gurdev, a prominent Bulgarian theater and cinema director.
The premiere shows became one of the most significant cultural events in Bulgaria during this season. They were attended by officials from the Embassy of the United States, including Ambassador John M. Ordway, representatives of America for Bulgaria foundation and American Foundation for Bulgaria. The author of the play was also in the theater hall. This was the second visit of Edward Albee in Bulgaria. He arrived for the first time in May, when the rehearsals of “The Goat or Who is Sylvia” started.
Edward Albee appeared on the American theater scene at the beginning of the sixties with a number of innovative plays – “The Zoo Story”, “Who’s afraid of Virginia Wolf”, “A Delicate Balance”, “Three Tall Women”. Albee has been awarded three Pulitzer Prizes and two Tony Awards, as well as the Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts.
After the last show, American Foundation for Bulgaria, in cooperation with members of the Harvard Club of Boston and the Harvard Club of Bulgaria, gave a reception in honour of Edward Albee in Sofia Live Club. The reception was attended by all the guests of the premiere, as well as by the National Theater team. Among the official guests was also the Deputy minister of Foreign Affairs and of course Edward Albee himself.
